2016 Dramatic Writing Competition

ADK Shakespeare is excited to sponsor its first Dramatic Writing Competition in 2016.

The Competition features two categories: Full-Length works as well as Shorts/One-Acts.

Most of our friends and family here at ADK Shakespeare have been impacted by one or more mental health issues, either in their own lives or the lives of their loved ones. We have seen first-hand how our society and culture apply a different standard to mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and addiction than they do to physical health issues. But suffering with depression or addiction is no less difficult than suffering from a viral infection or a broken bone. We believe it is critical that our society and culture make significant progress in regarding mental health issues as legitimate and serious, not things a suffering person should simply be able to shake off because they’re “only” in that person’s head.

For that reason, we would like all plays should deal, in some way, with the subject of mental illness. Entrants need not think of this subject matter as limiting: we regard this subject as being quite broad, encompassing a wide spectrum that would include both the Prince of Denmark and Willy Loman, but would stretch well beyond either of those highly functional characters. Plays may feature a character who suffers from mental illness, but may also center on characters who are not mentally ill themselves but dealing with the effects of living with a family member with mental illness, having a political leader with mental illness, or any similar circumstance. Please include with your submission a brief discussion (no more than 1 page) of how you see your work relating to the subject of mental illness.

ADK Shakespeare will be working with the New York chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to present a series of workshops and discussions addressing mental health issues and the use of Theatre as a tool in dealing with them as part of its first Annual Hamlet Conference in Autumn, 2016. The Company will produce staged readings of the competition finalists for conference attendees.

All interested playwrights should please submit their material online via submittable.com. Follow all directions on our Submittable page.
